One of the simplest things you can do to protect your vehicle is to stay on top of your oil changes. No matter if you drive a Silverado through a North Dakota winter or a Tahoe on daily errands around Devils Lake, ND, fresh engine oil is what keeps everything running smoothly. Skipping this routine service can lead to bigger, more expensive problems down the road. more What Engine Oil Actually Does Engine oil does more than lubricate moving parts. It helps reduce heat, prevents metal-on-metal wear, and carries away debris and contaminants that build up over time. As oil ages, it breaks down and becomes less effective at doing its job. That's why routine oil changes are a fundamental part of keeping your vehicle in good shape for the long haul. What Happens When You Skip Oil Changes Old, degraded oil thickens and loses its ability to flow properly through your engine. Over time, this can cause sludge buildup, increased friction, and accelerated wear on critical components. In serious cases, neglecting oil changes can lead to engine damage that far outweighs the cost of a simple service visit. How Often Should You Change Your Oil? This is one of the most common oil change FAQ topics, and the answer depends on a few factors. Your vehicle's year, model, and the type of oil it uses all play a role. Many newer Chevy models use a GM Oil Life Monitoring System that alerts you when it's time for a change based on actual driving conditions. As a rule, conventional oil typically requires more frequent changes than full synthetic but always follow your owner's manual or the guidance of a trained technician for the most accurate interval. Synthetic vs. Conventional Oil - Which Is Right for Your GM Vehicle? Many GM vehicles are designed to run on full synthetic oil, which offers better protection at extreme temperatures and longer service intervals. This is especially relevant in places like Devils Lake, ND, where cold winters can put extra stress on an engine during startup. A question that comes up often is if you can switch between oil types - and the answer is to consult your owner's manual or a certified service professional before making any changes to your vehicle's oil type. Trust Certified Service for Your Oil Changes When it comes to your Chevy working with trained technicians who use the right products for your specific vehicle makes a real difference. Chevrolet Certified Service technicians are trained to work on GM vehicles and use GM-approved oils and filters. Keeping a record of your oil changes also helps protect your warranty and supports your vehicle's resale value. Schedule Your Next Oil Change Today Staying current with your oil change schedule is one of the best habits you can build as a vehicle owner. It protects your engine, helps maintain performance, and can save you from costly repairs over time. If you drive a Silverado, Equinox, Colorado, or any other Chevy model, the team at Lake Chevrolet is here to help.
